*Same review as the one I posted for the 12-foot model, only expect even greater fish control and more casting distance with the 13-foot model*
I have owned a set of these for almost 2 years and have since upgraded to the new Sonik Gravity X, which will be getting a short term review in not too long.
So, where to start... ok well these look the business, feel the business, cast and play like a much more expensive rod without costing an arm and a leg. The mid-range rod market is saturated with so many choices, it can be frustrating picking a rod in the 250-300$ range. I hope my review takes some stress off of your buying process.
I mainly fish in strong Saint Lawrence river current and snaggy waters, so I need a rod with a significant amount of backbone to have full control over these powerful wild carp, therefore I really only look at 3.5 lbs. test curve rods when I'm rod shopping. Especially in summertime when the carp head into the depths, long range casting ability becomes a must. This rod delivers in both aspects, greatly increasing the level of control you have to get a low twenty to turn around from the weeds or to get your bait out to the opposite margin where you saw that giant rolling all morning.
My normal setup is a Sonik Tournos 10 000 spooled with 65 lbs. Power Pro Super Slick 8 braided mainline, with either a Korda SafeZone or Nash Diffusion leader (1.0m and 0.75m respectively) with an inline Fox Paste Bomb or Korda Bait Up method feeder in 2.5oz or 3.5oz size loaded with 1 to 2 oz. of method or Korda 4.5 oz. inline Dice lead, making my average casting weight approx. 4.5 oz. I have performed well over 1000 casts and maybe 300 fish done on at least one of my rods without ever hearing a single complaint from the blank, staying consistently accurate, with zero reel seat movement, minimal hook pulls (we all have that dodgy rig once in a while) and a best distance of approx. 140m (153 yards), rigged up for tough waters. This rod is quite easy to load up for big casts and surprisingly slim and lightweight considering its 3.5 lbs. rating, playing closer to a 3.25 all while getting great distance on a heavy setup.
While many overlook cosmetics in their purchasing decision, when you spend a considerable amount of money on a fishing rod, you expect it to at least look like it was worth it and the SK4 XTR does not disappoint. From the soft-touch coated DNPS reel seat to the 1k weave on the butt section and the satin finished ventilated collars and laser engraved end cap, this looks like a much pricier rod than it is, and follows Sonik's mantra of giving you the most bang for the money possible.
I have referred countless of fishing friends and acquaintances towards this rod (and its longer 13-foot brother) and every single angler has nothing but great things to say. It has proven its worth as a reliable rod to bring out to any of the toughest Long Sault swims (which are legendary for destroying all but your banksticks, and even then...) while still being soft enough that mid to high river teens will still give you an ear to ear smile, until you actually see them not being that 30 you were hoping for, of course.
Will all of this performance, value and looks, you're also fishing with total peace of mind knowing that your rod is backed by Sonik's acclaimed Rapidex warranty. Most definitely one of the best buys for any novice, intermediate or even expert anglers considering the aggressive pricing Sonik has managed to pull off with this one.
